faux narcolepsy + leisure suits

My fiancé’s sometimes-nickname for me is Narcoleptic because I can pass out anywhere, anytime within minutes of closing my eyes. I’m like this 365 days a year, but it’s gotten really bad now that it’s cold, dark and January.

No matter how much I will myself to be a night owl, I can’t escape the fact that my body shuts down at 10pm every night and seemingly 8:30pm in the winter. I also have the uncanny ability to nap for a couple hours, then proceed to bed later to continue on with a full night’s sleep. Last weekend, I went to a concert with friends at the 9:30 Club in DC and became unbelievably excited when I learned they have a coffee bar. Let’s be honest, just the name “9:30 Club” is the equivalent of my bedtime.  As everyone was enjoying cocktails, I was gulping down Coke and Café Mocha (yes both) to ensure that I didn’t pass out in a dark corner halfway through the show.

When I come home from work, it’s dark and cold in the condo. My definition of “dark” is when only a few, normal amount of lights are on. As if it actually helps to make the temperature warmer, I immediately turn on every single light until our place is glowing in a nuclear manner. Then I put on my winter leisure suit: t-shirt, hoodie, thick sweatpants, socks, furry slipper boots and then top it all off with the thickest, puffiest hotel robe that is what I would imagine three layered Snuggies feels like. I am essentially a walking mattress and comforter combo from the moment I get home until the moment I go to bed.

With this official leisure suit, I’m always prepared for any spontaneous faux-narcoleptic episodes.robe{my robe is like this, but an inch thicker and sans waffle pattern. photo via.}

Do you have any faux-narcoleptic tendencies? What is your go-to winter leisure suit?

  1. HA. Was this inspired by my 4am email to you saying ‘I bet you are sleeping with pink ear plugs and sparkles on your sheets’ …while I toss and turn FOREVER. I need some of your type of sleeping issues. Grass is always greener on the other side right? My LEISURE OUTFIT is JUICY COUTURE VELOUR PANT along with one of my many hoodies . OH, and my new L.L. bean warm slippers that my husband bought for me so that I wouldnt wear flip flops and crank up the heat.

    1. No! But, I died of laughter when I saw your email this morning. I actually wrote 95% of this post late last night (after a 9-11pm ‘nap’ :)), so it was such a funny coincidence. Your description of sparkly sheets was hilarious and I definitely need some now! I do have pink earplugs sometimes. :) I love your leisure suit!

  2. Ha! Jess is the same way. She’s literally snoring within a minute or two of laying down for bed. It’s not a bad problem to have, if you ask me… it often takes me up to an hour to fall asleep, and some nights I barely sleep at all. Jess falls asleep in the car easily too, another thing I can’t do. In fact I have trouble sleeping on any form of transportation— Planes, trains, or automobiles. Nor can I usually sleep well if I spend the night at a friend’s house.

    Who’d you see at the 9:30 Club? I always wished I had gone to a show there when I was living in VA.

    1. Haha, I can def snooze in cars and any type of moving vessel too. :) I would have no idea what to do if I couldn’t sleep! We saw Thievery Corporation and it was a pretty good show!

  3. TO IRON CUPCAKE- DITTO on everything!! I travel around the world and I am awake for 24hrs (even if Im in business class, I have never slept on a flight to Asia or Africa) and I cannot sleep over anyones house (including best friends and family) …Insomnia BLOWS especially when one is exhausted. I stuggle every night for many many years now…sleep studies and all.

  4. This past week I have had a really hard time getting up in the morning. Pushing the snooze button constantly. Going to make a better this week to get up on time. I also loose steam by 4:00pm I am ready for a nap. Maybe the older we get we are more affected by the seasonal blues. I used to not have this issue. I also find myself excusing myself to wearing comfy lulu in leu of normal clothes lol!. That is my go to winter leisure suit. For instance today. Went to gym already and am having no plans of showering until it’s an acceptable time to put on my PJs. Also we really don’t have any plans except maybe the park if it warms up. I figure the park is on attire for my lulu.
